Adopting a preventive
approach to public hygiene and food safety in the Saudi Municipalities,
the Saudi Ministry of Municipal and Rural Affairs initiated this project
with the intent of evaluating and updating public health-monitoring
systems applied in Saudi Arabia; standardizing health monitoring
procedures for food businesses and other businesses affecting public
health; raising public awareness regarding food safety and public
hygiene.
The project was
implemented in forty-two (42) municipalities in Saudi Arabia.
Chemonics Egypt
provided the following services for three components of the project:
Component 1:
development of public health monitoring system and regulations for food
businesses in Saudi Arabia municipalities:

Updating
thirty one (31) existing food safety and hygiene regulations
-
Formulation
of eighteen (18) new food safety and hygiene regulations
-
Development
of a manual for management of food poisoning cases
Component 2:
development of health monitoring procedures and licensing system for
food businesses:
-
Development
of an integrated computerized system for tracking health monitoring
procedures, consisting of four modules for inspection procedures on
different stores; issuance of licenses; tracking of financial affairs;
and issuance of permits

Training
municipalities personnel on utilizing the new application as well as
the provision of customer support services

Development
of best practices manual for health monitoring on food businesses and
other businesses affecting customers health
Component 3: Public
awareness:

Preparation
of twenty-five (25) posters, three (3) booklets on best practices for
handling and preserving food.

Design,
planning and implementation of training programs

Preparation
of training manuals (trainer manual and trainee manual)
